Finding your Niche in Internet Marketing

While lying in bed waiting for my phone to alarm at 5:50 am, I decided to browse Amazon’s Kindle ebook section.  I was wide awake, refreshed.  Perhaps it was from the recent time change; I really have no clue.  I’m never that excited or awake on a Monday morning.  Anyway, I was searching for information on starting your own web design business.  I dabble in web design.  I took a course in it and received a diploma, but my skills are no where near where I want them to be.  I’ve been thinking about going back to college to study for a degree in web design so I can start a home-based web design business.  So in thinking about it, I thought I’d get some perspective from others with experience.

I happened upon an eBook on Amazon titled How to Find Your Niche in Web Design and Development.  It sounded like something I could really learn from, so I bought it.  The most important thing I gained from the ebook is to find YOUR niche.  The book spoke about finding a specific area of the design business that you want to get into.  Instead of trying to do everything that’s required, do one thing.

This got me thinking about what it is that I already have in the works to do, which is create WordPress themes for affiliate marketers.  Owning and running a one person web design business can be very stressful and demanding.  It also sounded like something I might not enjoy doing.

Since finishing the book and thinking about all of the things I’m trying to do online, I was thinking that I really need to let something go.  Currently, I’m working on creating Squidoo lens to earn Amazon affiliate commissions.  I’m also blogging, but not enough.  I’m working on a seasonal affiliate website, again not enough.  I have a personal blog that rarely gets my attention along with two other affiliate websites.  I work a full-time job and have a family, so taking care of all of these things is very hard.

In this case, I seriously need to sit down and take a look at what’s working for me and what’s not.  I need to thoroughly search myself to see what it is that I want to put 100% of my internet marketing focus on.  I mean, in order to really excel in something, you’ve got to put your all in to it.  What makes it hard to focus on one thing is when you’re making money.

With the holiday season, I’m making money with my holiday Squidoo gift lens and blog.  However, selling WordPress themes will enable me to make money by doing something once.  As long as my website is up and themes are being sold, I’ll always have that income versus creating blog posts and Squidoo lens to earn affiliate commissions, and with seasonal items sales will be limited to a certain time of year.

If you’ve found that you’re in the same boat, jump!  Take some time and think about what you want your niche to be.  Sit down and write out your plans.  Here’s what I’m going to do.  I’m writing down what it is that I’m doing to make money online and which effort benefits me the most and for the longest time.  It’s tough, but start with one thing and grow it until you can’t any more.  Once you’re set and producing passive income, then you can move on to something else.
